as Teacher
My passion for teaching developed as a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music Precollege and as a teacher in the NYC public schools through multiple organizations including the Harmony Program in 2014. Since that time, I have continued to teach both beginner and advanced players.
Regardless of skill level or age, my goal is simple: leave them with a deeper love and enjoyment of music than they started with.
My high school students have consistently auditioned into some of the finest ensembles and collegiate institutions in the country including The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University and more. Some choosing to major in music, others choosing to participate in as a recreational pursuit.
Consider trying out private lessons for yourself or your child. As you grow in proficiency on the instrument, you will grow in your enjoyment of music!
Beginners
The first few years are CRITICAL in the brass player's development. Establishing a correct embouchure, learning to use one's air properly and understanding the symbols of musical notation are foundational to building confidence as a musician. With brass we cannot see the parts of our body that produce the sound and so it is absolutely critical to begin this process with a teacher.
I have started many students on the instrument and understand the process and patience necessary to laying correct foundations
Intermediate/Advanced High School
Dive into the foundations and fundamentals of the instrument. Begin to understand the mechanisms that are behind the techniques. Correct faulty foundations developed from your early years on the instrument.
I have developed trajectories that involve methods, etude books, and solo repertoire that will put students on a path towards a collegiate level sound and musicianship. The key is to advance at a pace that reinforces correct habits yet challenges to create growth.
College/Professional
Become even more strongly rooted in the fundamentals of the instrument so that you can become your own teacher, able to recognize bad habits and inefficiencies. Develop a strong sense of melodic voice and learn how to carry the audience with your soloistic sound.
Receive coaching and strategy for upcoming solo competitions. I have competed in many international competitions including the National Trumpet Competition, Ellsworth Smith International Competition, and Prague Spring International Competition.
I have years of experience in the orchestral, commercial, and jazz disciplines. Take a few lessons to learn how to dial in your playing and perhaps equipment to meet the needs a various professional settings.
Clinics & Workshops
I have worked with high school concert bands, orchestras, and jazz bands in clinic and workshop formats in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. I remember as a student, there was always energy and improvement every time an outside voice brought their expertise and experiences into a rehearsal.
I commit to bringing enthusiasm, intensity, and (I hope) fun to sessions with your ensembles.
Available to join your rehearsals, performances, or to help judge competitions in NJ, PA, CT, and NY areas. Options include marching band, pit orchestra, jazz band, orchestra, or other settings that your school may have!
Injuries/Embouchure adjustments
I am not ashamed to say that I have been injured and have worked through injuries and embouchure adjustments with many students. It is an incredibly challenging season for any brass player. I understand the emotional and psychological impact that these can have on your performance and practice mentality.
No student (or teacher!) enjoys going through these tough seasons. Yet it is a natural part of our physically demanding instrument and often the encouragement and wisdom of a teacher can help you to get back to strength in a safer manner.
